This presentation translates decades of research on age discrimination into actionable steps to overcome ageism and ableism both personally and professionally. Dr. Tracey Gendron explores the forces that have shaped our understanding of aging and what it means to be old. We will examine the deficiency in the understanding and acknowledgement of elderhood as a stage of development. To create a culture built on age-inclusion, a new image of aging is needed to disrupt ageist and ableist thought and behavior within ourselves, communities, policy and culture.

Dr. Tracey Gendron is the Chair of the Virginia Commonwealth University Department of Gerontology and Director of the Virginia Center on Aging. She is also the author of the book “Ageism Unmasked: Exploring Age Bias and How to End It”. She is an internationally recognized gerontologist with almost 30 years of experience as a grant-funded researcher and speaks to audiences globally about the real world impact of age bias.

Dr. Gendron will be available to autograph her book, which will be offered for sale outside the lecture theatre (credit or debit only).

ALIVE INSIDE is a joyous cinematic exploration of music’s capacity to reawaken our souls and uncover the deepest parts of our humanity. Filmmaker Michael Rossato-Bennett chronicles the astonishing experiences of individuals around the country who have been revitalized through the simple experience of listening to music. His camera reveals the uniquely human connection we find in music and how its healing power can triumph where prescription medication falls short. This stirring documentary follows numerous visionaries in healthcare including social worker Dan Cohen, founder of the nonprofit organization Music & Memory, as he fights against a broken healthcare system to demonstrate music’s ability to combat memory loss and restore a deep sense of self to those suffering from it.

The opportunity to delay or prevent up to 30% of dementia cases through the active management of vascular risk factors, notably hypertention, reducing smoking, managing diabetes mellitus and obesity is increasingly recognized as the potentially most effective approach to prevent and/or delay dementia. This is ever more compelling by the failure of approved pharmaceutical therapies for Alzheimer’s disease. Indeed, the last drug approved for symptomatic treatment by Health Canada was Mamantine in 2004.

Even a modest delay of 1 year in the onset of dementia by reducing cognitive decline and functional disability has been projected to save the Canadian health care system $120 billion over the next 3 decades. Current evidence identifies cognitive training, physical exercise aerobic and resistance type, and management of blood pressure, as interventions having the most scientific evidence, while metabolic disorders, depression, sleep quality, diet and social engagement have been identified as priority areas for future research. Relevant research evidence will be presented.

Dr. Montero Odasso (MD, PhD, FRCPC, AGSF, FGSA) Western University, Ontario is a Professor of Medicine, Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Western University (Ontario) and is Director of the “Gait & Brain Lab” at Parkwood Institute, London, Ontario. He is a geriatrician and clinician-scientist at the Lawson Health Research Institute and serves as team Leader at the Canadian Consortium on Neurodegeneration in Aging (CCNA) and team co-leader at the Ontario Neurodegenerative Research Initiative (ONDRI). He leads the Gait and Brain Health Program with the goal of understanding mechanisms and potential treatments of mobility and cognitive decline in older individuals.

On Thursday, March 1st, 2018, we will host our 2017-2018 Distinguished Lecture. This year’s speaker is Dr. Danielle Martin (Women’s College Hospital and University of Toronto).

Dr. Martin is author of “Better Now: Six Big Ideas to Improve Health Care for All Canadians.”

Her testimony before a US Senate subcommittee (about Canada’s health care system) had millions of views on YouTube.

Dr. Martin is the Vice President, Medical Affairs and Health System Solutions at Women’s College Hospital (WCH), and the founder of Women’s College Hospital Institute for Health System Solutions and Virtual Care, where she is also a Senior Innovation Fellow. She is a family physician in the Family Practice Health Centre at WCH, and associate professor at the University of Toronto.

Danielle Martin attracted a great deal of public and media attention for defending the Canadian health-care system before a U.S. Senate subcommittee. A YouTube video of her testimony, which gained traction after being shared by U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders, has since received millions of views.

The University of Regina Bookstore will have copies of Dr. Martin’s book on site and Dr. Martin will be available to sign copies.

Dr. Martin will discuss how to improve health care for seniors in Canada. Her talk is based off her book Better Now: Six Big Ideas to Improve Health Care for all Canadians. Canada’s health care system was built on a promise that we can all be proud of: the promise of access to services based on need, rather than the ability to pay. According to Dr. Martin, in order to deliver on that promise, especially for seniors, Medicare needs to be improved. In this talk, Dr. Martin will argue that we can do better. Now.

How can appropriately designed technology improve the quality of life of people living with dementia? How can they be provided with meaningful activities and engaging interactions?

On Monday, March 13th, at 6:00pm, the University of Regina Centre on Aging and Health will host our 2017 Brain Awareness Week event, which will be a presentation by Dr. Mark Chignell, Professor of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, University of Toronto.

Dr. Mark Chignell has a PhD in Psychology and a Masters in Industrial and Systems Engineering He is the Director of the Knowledge Media Design Institute and BUL Chair in Human-Computer Interaction. He carries out research in human factors and user interface design, with particular interest in aging, adaptive interfaces and healthcare, telecommunications, and driving.

In his talk, Dr. Chignell will discuss the development and evaluation of two new families of products for improving the quality of life for people with dementia by creating sense of purpose with meaningful tasks: Ambient Activities based on Montessori principles where sensory-motor interactions are emphasized and reinforcement-learning-based tools (also known as Centivizers) that are being developed in the Interactive Media Laboratory at the University of Toronto using an iterative design approach.

Dr. Chignell will discuss some of the science behind the use of Ambient Activities and Centivizers, describe some of the design challenges, as well as some of the methods he and his team are using to evaluate and improve these systems. In addition, he will demonstrate some of these new technologies and will set up some design-related activities where participants can form requirements and explore design options based on their experience with, or knowledge of, dementia. The goal is to make this talk a joint learning experience where we can exchange ideas on how to improve quality of life and sense of purpose for people with dementia.

Dr. Chappell has established two world-class university research centers on aging: University of Manitoba and University of Victoria. She has published over 250 academic articles and reports and has brought in over $45 million in research funding. She is past-president of the Canadian Association on Gerontology and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada as well as of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences.

Dr. Chappell will discuss social integration for older adults in terms of connection and participation, empowerment, and community. She will relate these concepts to individual participation as well as to broader concerns in society. Research suggests that interaction with others is good for the health and quality of life of older adults and perhaps most types of interaction can be positive, leaving a wide spectrum for individual choices. Although there is limited research on interventions, several examples appear beneficial such as the World Health Organization’s Age-Friendly Cities and Communities idea. Dr. Chappell will discuss the benefits of social integration as well as ideas on how older adults can become more socially engaged.
