2017-2018 Distingushed Lecture: Better Now: How we Can Improve Healthcare for Seniors

On Thursday, March 1st, 2018, we will host our 2017-2018 Distinguished Lecture. This year’s speaker is Dr. Danielle Martin (Women’s College Hospital and University of Toronto).

Dr. Martin is author of “Better Now: Six Big Ideas to Improve Health Care for All Canadians.”

Her testimony before a US Senate subcommittee (about Canada’s health care system) had millions of views on YouTube.

Dr. Martin is the Vice President, Medical Affairs and Health System Solutions at Women’s College Hospital (WCH), and the founder of Women’s College Hospital Institute for Health System Solutions and Virtual Care, where she is also a Senior Innovation Fellow. She is a family physician in the Family Practice Health Centre at WCH, and associate professor at the University of Toronto.

Danielle Martin attracted a great deal of public and media attention for defending the Canadian health-care system before a U.S. Senate subcommittee. A YouTube video of her testimony, which gained traction after being shared by U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders, has since received millions of views.

The University of Regina Bookstore will have copies of Dr. Martin’s book on site and Dr. Martin will be available to sign copies.

Dr. Martin will discuss how to improve health care for seniors in Canada. Her talk is based off her book Better Now: Six Big Ideas to Improve Health Care for all Canadians. Canada’s health care system was built on a promise that we can all be proud of: the promise of access to services based on need, rather than the ability to pay. According to Dr. Martin, in order to deliver on that promise, especially for seniors, Medicare needs to be improved. In this talk, Dr. Martin will argue that we can do better. Now.
